The BMW GS has defined the adventure motorcycle segment for over four decades, and the all-new R 1300 GS represents the most significant evolution of the platform since the introduction of liquid cooling in 2013.
The headline figures are impressive: the new 1300cc boxer twin produces 145 horsepower and 149 Nm of torque, increases of 9% and 11% respectively over the outgoing R 1250 GS. More importantly, BMW has managed to reduce the bike's weight by 12 kg through extensive use of lightweight materials and a redesigned frame.
During our test ride through the mountains of southern Spain, the R 1300 GS demonstrated remarkable agility for a large adventure bike. The new chassis geometry provides more feedback from the front end, inspiring confidence on twisty mountain roads while maintaining the stability the GS is known for.
BMW has completely revamped the electronics package, introducing a 10.25-inch TFT display with integrated navigation and smartphone connectivity. The radar-assisted adaptive cruise control and blind spot detection are industry firsts for adventure motorcycles, adding an extra layer of safety for long-distance touring.
The semi-active suspension has also been refined, now featuring automatic preload adjustment that adapts to the rider, passenger, and luggage weight. In off-road mode, the system provides more compliance over rough terrain while preventing bottoming out on larger obstacles.
